How to resize (for next reboot) a partition on a remote computer from running WinXP?

L

Leslie Brooks

I have a friend sitting far away from my home. He is not a computer expert
but wants to follow my advise to split his (only) current partition (C:)
into two partitions (C: and D:).

I would do such an operation from a bootable CD with Partition magic
or Paragon Partition Manager.

Howver as I said before I am NOT sitting in front of this computer and he
can not do such operations like choosing extend partition and create logical and ...

So I am searching for a way to tell his computer (through remote session)
from a running session to do the patition resize+creation at next startup/boot.

In detail the following should be done:

1.) Shrink partition C: from 80 GB to 15 GB
2.) Create extended partition in the new unassigned area
3.) Create logical partition D: in thejust created extended partition
4.) format D: with NTFS

Can I do all this from a running WinXP?

I could imagine that there is a built-in command program which
uses a script at next boot time to perform all these operations.

The most important first question is why does he want to do that ?

Many of that level of individual want to do that for no good reason.

I'd use Acronis Disk Director myself.

Why have you decided that he needs two partitions ?

This is Microsoft...

If you need to use Windows (and if it is NTFS, you basically
have to), the only real option I see is to either put the drive
into another Microsoft box as secondary drive (and then use
the usual remote login possibilities) or to do something
similar with a Windows boot CD.

However, I am not sure you can even use the two tools you mention
from Windows. And at least Partition magic is extremely likely to
damage the drive structure, so a complete backup is absolutely
essential.

Maybe the best way is to FedEx the disk to you.

If you don't advise backing up before re-part'ing, then you aren't
much of a friend. E.g., if the power fails part way thru part'ing,
will you part.mgr. recover?

In my opinion, it is risky to change partitions when in front of the
PC itself so doing it remote is not recommended! I would follow this
advise:

"If it ain't broken, don't fix it!"

XP does not have any partition utility native to it so as to resize
partitions.

As others have indicated, this operation can be performed remotely.
However, still others have questioned the need for this. One 80GB
partition should work just fine for Windows, programs and data.

A separate external hard drive may be a better approach, if the need is
for more data storage.

The way i do this;
0) Make sure that he makes a 'drive image' to an external drive!!!!
1) Through remote session install iTalc (FreeWare)
2) Through iTalc install Partition Manager (must be under Windows NOT a
boot disk)
3) Run partition manager
4) After ALL changes have been requested in the partition manager, then
commit them.

Note that if his system doesn't have any problems, then you'll be fine.
If the partition manager has problems, then you may end up bolluxing
his system.
