How to reduce CD speed with Windows XP Media Player 8.0?

Norbert Juffa

When I play audio CDs with Windows XP (Media PLayer 8.0)
it spins up the CD/DVD drive to a high speed. This causes
much noise which is very annoying when trying to listen to
music. It is also completely unnecessary to spin up the
drive to such high speed, since an audio CD requires only
1X read speed.

I have searched both the Media Player settings and the
control panel for a setting that lets me control the drive
speed for audio CDs but haven't found anything yet.

Does anybody know how I can force Media Player to play
audio CDs at the 1X rate? In case it matters, the drive
is identified by the Device Manager as HL-DT-ST RW/DVD
GCC-4480B and the computer is a Dell Dimension 4600.

I am having a similar problem to Norbert, but not just
with CD's, I think I set the speed too fast and now I have
no idea how to slow it down. Just wondering if anyone had
answered Norbert and could help me.

You can't. If it sounds noisy you've either a noisy unit or its on its way
to the big CD player in the sky.

There are two possible solutions:

1)
Go to the properties of the drive and uncheck the 'Enable digital CD audio
for this CD-ROM drive'.
If you do this you must make sure that you have connected the audio output
of the drive to the soundcard.

2) (easier)
Install a utility to decrease the CD speed.
Nero DriveSpeed is freeware and is installed with Nero or it can be
downloaded at http://www.cdspeed2000.com)
