How to recover from bad video driver install?

Folks,

I have a Sony PCV-RX860 desktop, and attempted to update the video driver
from generic SVGA to SiS® 650 Chipset Driver provided on Sony's driver site*
for Windows Xp Home, with SP2. Something went awry, and now after windows
boot up and initialization of the video driver, no video signal output is
produced. I attempted to recover using knowledge base article**, "How to
start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature in
Windows XP", however no boot up combination option would allow me to get to a
prompt or restore windows functionality. It seems this driver has really
messed something up. Any ideas how I can roll back this driver or recover
from a crashed video driver install?

Thanks,
BEA

the easiest is to simply repair the
windows o.s. with your windows
setup cd. It does sound like
you got a couple of issues other
than the vid driver. But the repair
will be the easiest way to start.

insert and boot from you windows
setup cd, select new install/upgrad and
when cd finds your os on the hd, point
to it and select repair (instead of new install)

it is a good idea not to have anything
connected to the pc except your mouse
kb and monitor that is plugged into the
standard port. If you got a vid board
installed, then temporarily remove as
it can stall your repair.

afterwards, i think you will be in much
better shape and can handle the rest....

How about booting into SAFE mode and do a system restore to a place before
your update?

To the to the safe mode screen by tapping the F8 key repetitivly BEFORE
Windows starts. This would be when the PC maker logo is on the screen,
almost the first thing you see when your PC starts.

I seem to recall there is also a 'Safe Video Mode' or something to that
effect. It's been a LONG time since I've needed the startup menu.

You can then go thru the control panel and change the driver back to what
it was and restart. If that is what was causing the problem, this should
set it back and you can try the driver update again.

Another possibility is that the new install set the refresh rate one your
monitor can't display, that would explain no signal.

DanS
