How to prevent drawing tools from changing view mode?

I usually use "normal" view when editing a document.

But when I select a drawing tool (e.g, text box), the
view is switched to "print layout", which initially is
"whole page".

I can work around this by setting "zoom" to 100%. But
it is a nuisance.

How can prevent drawing tools from changing the view
mode?

I have tried deselecting Tools / Options / View /
Print and Web Layout Options / Drawings, to no avail.

In fact, when I subsequently select a drawing tool in
"normal" view mode, not only does the view switch to
"print layout", but also I find the Drawings option
re-selected.

(To be honest, I do not know what the Drawings option
is supposed to do.)

(11.6359.6360) SP1 on an MS Win XP Pro system.

G'Day Joe,

"Normal View" is the view that presents the fastest updated view
as you type. For myself, I gave up using it when CPU speeds rose
above 100MHz, because then update speeds in Page Layout (as
it was then known) began to be acceptable.

Normal View does show ANY layout information.

When you Draw in Word, Word assumes that you are going to
'lay out' your drawing (ie put it in some 'position' relative to the
text), and switches to a layout view.

That's It!!

Because objects in the drawing layer are not visible in Normal view, Word
switches to Print Layout view when you display the Drawing toolbar or select
a drawing tool because it assumes you plan to create a drawing object and
want to be able to see it.

By gosh, you're right. Has it always been this way?

I don't remember ever having this problem. But come to
think of it, I have not used drawing tools in Word much
(ever?) in the past. I usually use PowerPt.

The irritating thing is: whenever I open the doc file, it seems to
open in Normal View. I tried saving it while Print Layout View, to
no avail. Am I doing something wrong?

This is bad. It gives the unwary user (another person I might share
the file with) the impression that there are no graphics (drawings).

In fact, I just sent the doc file to someone to print. What happens
if they print in Normal View mode?

(I'm not in a position to try it myself right now.)

That is nice. But it only helps those who know about.
Moreover, it seems to affect all doc files the same way.
I thought MS Word saved the state of the display in the
doc file so that it would be opened the same way. Sigh,
I guess not. But this has seriously adverse consequences
when the file contains "drawings".

Anyway, thanks for pointing this out to me. I will make
sure other people who share my doc files are made aware
of this.

The point is that a document opens in the view in which it is saved. But the
document isn't actually saved if you just open it, change the view, and then
hit Save. You have to make some other change (such as Spacebar, Backspace)
to "dirty" the file so that Word will save it.

And even from normal view, the drawings will print correctly - check with
Print Preview.

Right. I should have realized that. But I ass-u-me-d that I had
saved the file after making drawing changes, which means it should
have been in Print Layout View then. I guess not. Klunk!
