There is a char char char char char char style that seems to be continually
re-created in my Word docs. It can be an old doc or a brand new one. You
can delete the style because it seems to be based on Normal, but it keeps
coming back. When it is in, it shows up in the toolbar so you have to open
up styles to see what style you really have isolated. HELP!!! Thanks

Jay,

I have tried running this Macro and receive Run-Time Error "5173". I have
checked my updates and my system is current. Can you please assist?

Thanks

Graham,

Thank you very much for the response! It sounds like my problem may not be
fixable.... which is a huge concern given I am working with company templates
(inherited from many sources).

I am on Windows XP and all of my updates are current. I assume the hot fix
has long been incorporated into the standard service packs. If this is not
the case, please advise and let me know if I should apply the hot fix.

If my system is current, is there a way to save the documents stripping out
the commands and then reformat manually? Other ideas?

THANK you for your time!

MS Word style

How do I remove the char char char style that suddenly appeared. I cannot even find it to delete (but understand that does not work in any case) in the list of styles on the right hand side. I cannot copy whole document out - or change all the char char char styles to another as it includes a full range of styles in a 70 page document.

I accidentally discovered one way it might get added to your document. Using a protected hyphen, especially in AutoText entries. For example, I had a completely clean document I was working on for the first time and I entered a protected dash. I had the word "x-ray" entered into AutoText" to substitute "x<protected dash>ray" to keep the word together in documents.

As soon as I typed it and it substituted the word in with the protected hyphen, there the Car Car ... Char style was in my document.

As for how to get rid of it ... I haven't been able to do that yet, other than to start over and avoid using a protected hyphen, especially in AutoText.

I find a way to delete the invisible char char style: you have to 1) export your text in .rtf format. 2) open it with a text editor (like notepad ++) 3) Search the text char char (or other name of the style) 4)Delete the text between the accolades { } where the char char is. 5) save. 6) Open it again with Word. 7) save it again in .doc format. Et Voilà!

If you paste text from another document, the char char style will be there again. So paste without style or redo all the steps to erase char char again...
