How to open the program in XP that was backed up using 98 backup?

I have recently migrated from Windows 98 to XP Home edition. Before the
migration I have backed up several small programs that I needed on the
external hard drive, using Windows 98 backup program. Now, I can not
reinstall this program on my new PC, because it does not recognize the backup
file.

Hi,

No, it doesn't because the file compression used is not compatible with the
backup utility in WindowsXP. You will have to recover the files in a Win98
installation, then copy them to something like floppy or CD in order to
bring them over to WindowsXP. By the way, programs need to be installed, you
can't simply copy the program folders - they will be missing necessary
registry information and files that are in the system folders. These can
only be gained by using the program's setup routine.

The backup programs in Windows 98 and XP are not compatible with
each other, so you can't directly do what you want. You have two
alternatives:

1. Read your backup on another Windows 98 machine, and copy the
files to CDs (in normal format, not backup format), which can be
read on your XP machine.

2. On Windows XP, try "BackUp My PC."

I understand that this will read your Windows 98 backups,
although I have no personal experience with it.

Correct. NTBackup won't recognize the QIC files created by the backup
program of Win98.

Further, even if it could, and you managed to pull those applications
out of the backup set, they could still very well not work. Just
restoring the files from a backup does not "install" them. Many need
registry entries and/or ini files not contained within the directory
of the app which you likely backed up.

FYI, there are third-part (ie, not free) programs which can read those
QIC backup sets you have. Whether you will accomplish your task,
though, is far from guaranteed.
