I am attempting to backup vista a NAS on a home network (which doesn't
require a user names or password to access) and I keep receiving a request
for user name and password then the message " no mapping between the account
names and secuirty ID was done". Anyone know where to locate instructions
for mapping account names and security ID's?

Thank,

I'm having the same problem. I'm trying to back up to a folder on a Western
Digital Netcenter over the network. I can see and access files through
explorer, but when I try through the Back Up Files wizard, I get a popup that
says:
"The network share could not be accessed for the following reason:
No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. (0x80070534)
Please ensure that the network location is valid."

Steps to reproduce:
1) Control Panel\Backup and Restore Center
2) Select Back up files
3) Click continue when it asks for permission
4) Select the On a network radio button
5) Browse out to my folder on the WD-Netcenter
6) Click Next
7) Enter user name and password
8) Click ok.

One thing to note, it doesn't seem to matter if I enter the correct
username/password or not.

I have Windows vista home premium.

Thanks.

The error message itself is just a fancy way of saying a user name is
invalid, but as to why you're getting the error message, I don't know.

I had exactly the same problems but I got round it by using 'guest' as the
username and 'password' as the password. Presumably these are the defaults
set up on the Netcentre. Backup is now working fine (for what it's worth) and
hopefully should schedule itself for the next run.

RichC593 - The NAS is running some form of embedded Linux or Unix so
there may be a few issues here. One is that there is the ability in
Samba (the way *nix boxen can communicate and share with Windows boxen)
to map Windows user names/passwords to *nix user names/passwords. If you
can create user names, etc. on your NAS, then just make one for your
Vista user. If your NAS allows Guest access as DannyH's does, then you
can use that. Guest is usually disabled in Samba on computers but the
NAS setup may be different.

Another issue with Vista and NAS devices is that Vista only allows
NTLMv2 authentication. Samba 1.x and 2.x only support LM and NTLM. If
you are able to update Samba to 3.0.22 or later, NTLMv2 is supported.
Usually you can't do this on a NAS so you can check with the NAS mftr.
to see if there is updated firmware.
