How to manage Identities in Outlook like in Outlook Express

Gary Link

I have always used OUtlook Express and am considering
using Outlook because of the increased security and
features. I have Outlook 2003.

When using Outlook Express I had 3 different email
accounts and could use each independently and switch from
one to another by just changing identities.

I tried to set up Outlook and I entered the various email
accounts and it downloads emails from all 3 accounts to
the same inbox.

Is there a way in Outlook to setup separate email
identities and keep my emails separate like I did in OE?

Is it really advantageous to change to Outlook over OE?

You can set up separate profiles in Outlook and then attach each of the
e-mail accounts to one of the profiles. However, you have to close and
restart Outlook to switch between the profiles. If you want to set this up,
go to Control Panel | Mail and then click Show Profiles. Make sure you set
it to prompt you for a profile when you start Outlook.

As to whether or not it makes sense to switch to Outlook for OE, that is
completely subjective. Outlook is a full-featured PIM and includes a
calendar, tasks, and a lot of other features that OE doesn't have. However,
it still uses OE for newsgroup reading. Some folks use Outlook for the PIM
features and OE for e-mail.

Outlook does not have the concept of identities

Use a separate profile for each account.

It depends on your requirements. For example, if I needed only POP access
to mail and didn't need calendaring and task tracking, I'd use Outlook
Express. It isn't really any less safe that Outlook.
