How to make the start menu show all programs

M

Martin C

Whenever I click on the Start button and go to Programs, the sub menu is
displayed, but it has the double arrow at the bottom of the list. You have
to click on this double array to get all of the programs to be listed.

As I run on a reasonably high resolution, it is more than possible to view
all of the programs listed without any problems.

The question, therefore, is how I can get it to stop the necessity to click
on the double arrow to display all of the programs in the Start/Programs sub
menu.

I should also mention that I use the Classic Menu setting.

TIA

Hi,

In the taskbar and start menu settings/customize, you want to disable
personalized menus.

With the Classic Start Menu, both of these need to be UNChecked.
XP Start Menu doesn't have Use Personalized Menus option.

XP Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button | Advanced tab |
Scroll down to and UNCheck:
Scroll Programs * |
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Classic Start Menu >>
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Scroll down to and UNCheck both of these:
Scroll Programs * |
Use Personalized Menus **
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

[*Specifies whether to display the items on the Programs menu as one long
scrolling menu or as horizontal pages. Depending on your screen resolution,
if you have more than 29 or 38 programs installed, and you select to have
one long scrolling menu, you can access the programs you don’t see
by clicking the arrow at each end of the list of programs.]

[**Specifies whether to turn on Personalized Menus.
Personalized Menus keeps the Programs menu clean by hiding items you haven't
used recently, while still keeping other programs easily accessible. You
can gain access to hidden programs by clicking the down arrow at the bottom
of the Programs menu.]

I obviously got the wrong end of the stick when I ticked the 'Use
personalized menus'. I though that was to allow you to re-jig the menu how
you wanted it to look (eg grouping applications into new folders such as
Graphics, Tools, Reference etc).

If I untick the 'Use personalized menus' will that stop me from adjusting
the menu structure? I am currently in the process of placing all my software
back on a new PC with WinXP Home on it (after having used Win98SE for
years).

Guess I will have to try it out.

Thanks for the help guys.

Hi,

You can still reorganize the start menu. The idea behind the "personalize"
bit is that the menu initially only shows you applications that you
frequently use.

Thanks Rick. I had missed your input in the Win98 group, but now that I too
have moved over to XP, it is good to see your advice is still present here.
