how to make the slide background transparent?

Is it possible to change the entire background of ppt slide transparent?
therefore when the slide show starts, people can see what's been marked
underneath. I have tried the Background in the Master slide but the
"transparency" bar was greyed out... any ideas?
Thanks!

If you are using PowerPoint XP/2002 and above:
You can go to the Slide Master, then insert the background as a picture (
Insert > Picture > From File).
Set the size of the picture. Allow it to fill the screen if that is what you
want.
Then, right click on the picture and click Custom Animation.
Click add effect > Emphasis > Transparency. Set to 50%, After previous.
*Take note that this picture will always be at the back if you place it at
the Slide Master. If you do not what that, add it to individual slides
instead of doing it in the Slide Master.
