How to make the 2000 server hold the FSMO roles?

I encounter problem which my domain controller that holding the FSMO roles is
down. I have to bring up the second server which I previously promoted it as
an additional domain controller in the same domain forest.

Can I do transfer role without the primary domain controller?

Hi

thanks for reply.

eventhough the Primary domain Controller is not exist in the Domain Forest.
By the additional domain control itself can perform transfer FSMO roles.

You have to seize the roles, rather than transferring them, as referenced by
the article in Denis' post.

Seizing is slightly less civilised than transferring and can only be done
from the command line. Just make sure that the original server doesn't ever
come back online once you have seized the roles.

I will try on that. This is the guide I need when my primary domain controller
can't return I have to bring the other domain controller as primary domain
controller immediately.

Just to add some info about the seizing process.
If you run the seize command it will first try to transfer the role before
it seizes it. So, if you have a connection and you did a "typo" the process
will transfer the role, if possible, before falling back to seizing.
