How to make 2003 server shut down more easily

M

marsha

The server always wants to know why we are shutting down i.e., planned or
unplanned.
How can I delete that step from the process??

Thanks

Start up the Group Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC) and expand the following
branches:

Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
System

Under System you will find the Shutdown Event Tracker and can disable it.

It's more fun to pick "other" and put "bite me" in the description.

Unless you're the sysadmin who has to review those logs ... :)

LOL Phillip. My kind of humor. However, no one else can shut down
the server because they can't figure out the right reason. LOL

I tried going to the Shutdown Event Tracker but it doesn't seem to have
been configured?????????? So I don't have that option. I must surely
be mistaken but that is the way I read it.

Since the reason is ALWAYS that we want to turn the darn
thing off, it is a waste of time and confuses everyone else when
I'm not there.

However, either I don't understand your answer (probably) or
I have somehow screwed up. It seems to indicate that I haven't
configured that (which I didn't). I just want to turn it OFF.

Is there something else I can try???
Thanks Richard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did eventually find the group policy editor but after a day like today, I
could
not find my way back to it tomorrow. All my brain cells have been burn off
in
an effort to create a safety zone for the forest (whatever that is).

Could you remind of the first thing I do to get there?? And what if
Shutdown Event Tracker is not listed there???

Thanks Richard. You are a sweetheart!!!!

Open GPEDIT.MSC

Expand Computer Configuration if it is not already expanded

Click the + sign next to Administrative Templates

Highlight System

The Shutdown Event Tracker is disabled in the list of settings on the right.

Open GPEDIT.MSC

Thanks Richard. I am very new to server OS. Could you tell
me where to open GPEDIT.MSC?

Thanks so much for all of your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Click Start, then Run, type GPEDIT.MSC into the text box. It's also
available in the Computer Management window in Administrative Tools.

There is no reference to Shutdown Event Tracker in any sub-item or anywhere
else that I can find under System.
System has many sub-folders under it. If it is there, I couldn't find it.
Admittedly, today was crazy. But I spent
5 minutes looking in each sub-folder under System and could not find it.

Any other ways of finding it??? Or turning it off??

Thanks Richard (and all)

It's right in the System folder - highlight the System folder and it will be
in the right-hand pane to be disabled.

THANK YOU!!! And of course, you were right. Sheesh, it was a crazy day but
I would have sworn I looked there. That teaches me to never swear. :)

I try not to swear, at least not in public. :)

Glad you got it settled in the end.
