How to logon as Administrator

A

algernon bonzo

I got a laptop with Vista Home Premium preinstalled and am getting
ready to set it up the way I want it. Unfortunately I couldn't find
the Administrator account and none of the methods I googled were
available because there is no Users section to the Computer Management
console.

What is the method for making Administrator the default account? No
matter how complex.

Thanks, but that only says that Administrator is disabled by default.
No instfuctions for making it available.

Not that complex...

Click the start button > Type in the following

cmd

Hold down 'ctrl' and 'shift', before pressing enter

Then enter or paste in this command

net user administrator /active:yes

Then log out and you should see the account appear.

Enable Logging in as the Administrator

* Right click on "Command Prompt" and click "Run as Administrator", then
type "regedit" and press enter.
* In the Registry Editor, browse to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon

* Add a new key called "SpecialAccounts".
* Inside the new "SpecialAccounts" key, add a key called "UserList".
* Within the "UserList" key, create a 32-bit DWORD value called
"Administrator" and set its value to 1.

* Close the Registry Editor and back in the command prompt window, run
"control userpasswords2".
* Click on the Advanced tab, then under "Advanced User Management" click
the Advanced button.
* Next, click on Users and right click the Administrator account and
select Properties.
* Finally, remove the check from "Account is disabled".
* Reboot and you should see the Administrator account on the Welcome
screen.

Does the 'ctrl' and 'shift' work for you? This does not work on my Vista Ultimate PC.
I have read elsewhere that doing this will open an admin command prompt, but when I do
this, the start menu just goes away and nothing else happens.

Press the windows key
type cmd (cmd shows up highlighted on the start menu
press and hold crtl+shift
press the enter key
Nothing...

If I press the enter key only, a command propmpt window does open.

Yes, it does work here, but if not another one is creating a shortcut to
cmd.exe, right-clicking it, and choosing 'Run as administrator' which is
effectively the same.

I'm surprised it doesn't work though - might be a group policy setting or
something.

Ooooh....it may be this......

If you move the mouse at all eg to the right of the start menuj before
pressing the ctrl-shift-enter, then I also get the effect you mention.
Pressing the ctrl-shift-enter immediately after pressing the 'd' and things
work normally. You may have discovered a bug.

Here's another way to enable the Administratrator account. Start |
lusrmgr.msc, left click on it, or right click and Run as Administrator if
in standard account, then expand the Users section, right click
Administrator, enable. It will show up on the Welcome Screen.

Or Start | Computer Management. This has a Local Users and Groups snap in.

That Group, Local Users and Groups, is missing from my Home Premium
Computer Management app. This was how I got to the Administrator
account in the Beta, but no more.

Works! Thanks. I ran it from a Shorcut as Administrator.

How did you come by this trick?

I appreciate it. Now, if only we had the XP Powertoys.
