How to know Service Pack 1 is installed?

O

Oliver Kieran

1 I believed SP1 was installed on my XPHome because I ran the express
update and it reported all ok.

2 There were several Hotfixes (SP1) on my machine.

3 I thought it curious but acceptable that I was offered SP1 as a
critical update EVERY time I scanned for updates.

4 I was not unhappy until I tried to sort out a problem with my Pinnacle
Edition 5 video editing software and DV 500 hardware.

5 If I tried to use all the functions of Edition upgraded software I lost
the control ability of my IEEE firewire port to my camera.

6 Pinnacle tried to diagnose my problem by reading a System Info dump.

7 They concluded I had not got SP1 and since their software needed it I
should update and all would be well.

8 On the basis that System Properties display in Computer Management does
not say "Service Pack 1" they say it is not installed. OK.

9 No matter what I do I can not install it. I have risked taking out my
virus checker and firewall and all other startup progs.

10 I have tried the express setup and the downloadable manual version
without success.

11 Are Pinnacle right about SP1 not being installed?

12 Any suggestion for installing SP1 and knowing it really is there doing
its job?

Right click My Computer, take Properties, and look below System
on the General tab; it will say Service Pack 1 there if it is in fact
installed on your machine.

Thank you Smitty. Have checked. It is not there. That agrees with
Pinnacle. I am now stuck with an XP 2002 which I can't update and a
Pinnacle system which is not entirely compatible with my XP.

Not quite sure what you mean: Computer Management as I understand it
does not have System Properties

Control Panel - System (or r-click on My Computer - Properties) will say
if it is installed

If you get the full 130 MB Network download, from
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
and run it from the present system, it should run. *Provided* it is a
legitimate XP copy you have - there are pirated ones which MSoft prevent
from installing SP1

But it is worth taking some precautions. The following may turn out
overkill, but a few minutes is worth while. Also be sure you have a
good backup of important matters against any possible total disaster
(like the one who had pulled the power in the middle).

It is important to ensure you have nothing getting in the way..

I suggest
Empty the folder windows\system32\catroot2
(which can give rise to spurious messages about Cryptographic services)

Disable all anti-virus and firewall etc in their own settings. Also if
you have any program that changes the splash screen, or provides more
styles by modifying the system files (esp Styles-XP), uninstall it

If you ever installed XP-Antispy, it disables a dll XSP1 needs, so just
in case, Start - Run and run
regsvr32 licdll.dll
regsvr32 regwizc.dll

Start - run Msconfig.exe
Uncheck the Load Startup items; and in Services page check 'hide
Microsoft services' and uncheck those lines left. Put them back when
all is up and running

OK, and reboot to a clean machine from which to run the SP1 setup. All
this should not be necessary, but is worth the trouble, to make sure

Alternative to that big download is getting the consolidated CD of
security updates (which includes SP1 and a lot of later fixes too) -
order at
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp

You also need the downloads for the following to be reasonably up to
date after that , especially
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;835732 (Sasser worm patch)
and the
837009 (OE Cumulative)
832894 (IE Cumulative)
828741 (XP Cumulative)
828028 (ASN 1)
837001 (Jet Engine)

.

1) Is there any particular reason

2) you divided your post into

3) numbered paragraphs?

You can click Start / Run.
Type WINVER, and hit enter.

If SP1 is installed, "Service Pack 1" will appear in the dialog box that
opens.

Thanks for all the advice. Obviously SP1 is not installed. I shall try
everything suggested by Alex Nichol.

As for Wislu: I wrote that way so even semi-literate people could spot that
I try to think logically but there are gaps in my knowledge. Wislu I need
some help with correct syntactical use of the gerundive. Can you help?
OK
