How to insert page with different page numbering

Lisa S

I am using Word 2003 and trying to insert a page "a" (i.e. insert page 407a
after page 407). I have added the new page as a separate section and managed
to changed the page number to 407 (so there are now two 407 pages). But, when
I add an "a" to the page number it adds an "a" to all the page numbers in the
whole document. I cannot figure out a way to prevent this. I could possibly
do this in 2007 and save as 2003 format it I need to. Any ideas? What am I
missing?

Hi Lisa,

In addition to the section break that you made between page 407 and 407a,
you need to have a section break between page 407a and page 408. Both the
header (or footer) containing the page number in the section for page 407a
and the header (or footer) containing the page number in the section for page
408 and the remaining pages must be configured to be different from the
header (or footer) for preceding section. (If the Same as Previous label is
displayed, on the Header and Footer toolbar, click Link to Previous.) The
page numbering in the section for page 407a should be set to start at page
407 (as you seem to have done), and the page numbering in the section for
page 408 and the remaining pages should be set to start at page 408.
Alternatively, if you may be inserting or removing pages before page 407, and
the number of page 407a may need to be changed, you can create a field of the
form {={PAGE} - 1} in the last two sections and set the numbering to continue
from the previous sections. Write back if you need detailed instructions for
creating such a field.

While it is possible to restart page numbering within a given section
without unlinking headers or footers, if you're going to change anything
else (as you are doing by inserting the a), then you need to unlink that
specific header/footer from those preceding and following (and, as Pesach
points out, if you haven't inserted a section break after 407a as well as
before it, you need to do that also).
