How to improve the speed of my Compaq nx 9005?

I'm running Version 5.1.2600 - Service Pack 2 with Symantec Norton AntiVirus:

Every action takes an age, it's almost like everything i do is being checked
(virus or otherwise). From switch-on it takes about 5/8mins to boot up -
opening email attachments can take forever. When i switch off i quite often
get a couple of warning windows entitled ccAPP.

Also from fully charged the machine shuts down after about 5/10 mins with a
low battery warning. I have only recently replace the battery, so i feel sure
it's not that.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

The best thing you can do is get rid of Norton, it suck your pc to a craw.
Need one that is not as bloated and intrusive.

I use NOD 32 instead. Used to use Norton years ago and, apart from taking
over the system, it let quite a few nasties through completely undetected.
Free online scanners found a long list of infections even when Norton was
running a full system scan every week and reporting nothing.

Best thing to do with Norton is to let it rest in peace...
