How to get rid of a "phantom" window on my taskbar.

I've recently noticed a generic sort an icon on my taskbar, indicating that a
window is open on my desktop. When I click on the icon, nothing happens. If
I use alt-tab to scroll through open windows, it never shows up. If I close
everything I have running, the icon still appears on the taskbar. I've used
task manager to kill various processes and process trees, but I've never been
able to turn off this window. This "phantom window" returns every time I
boot the system.

I'm using a software firewall, behind my hardware DSL modem and firewall and
I'm also using recently updated virus protection.

The system is otherwise acting normally. It's not slow or acting odd in any
other way.

Has anyone seen this problem before? Is there a good way to get rid of, or
at least identify this strange window? It's mostly an annoyance, but I'd
like to have the system back to normal.

Thanks
