How to get addresses into Address Book from Contacts

J

Joan

I have Outlook 2002.

I'm new to Outlook and Outlook Express and quite frankly, while not a
newbie, I'm not an expert, so please bear with me. I've been using
Netscape almost exclusively and now want to change. I was happily able
to export my Netscape address book into Outlook Contacts, via Outlook
Express.

I just realized that there is also an Address Book in Outlook. Mine has
no data in it. How can I create an address book by transferring my
Contacts into it---either from Contacts, Outlook Express or Netscape.

There is one other thing I would like to be able to do. I have my full
address book on Daytimer 1997, which is no longer supported or
manufactured. Daytimer has been a great program for me, but now I would
like to export all the data in that to another program, probably
Outlook. I have a bit of information on this issue, but have not been
able to do it yet. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Joan

The Address Book is simply a view of your Contacts Folder, so you have
nothing to export. All you need to do is configure your Address Book
correctly.
Go to Tools | E-mail accounts, select "View or change existing directories
or address books", and click OK. If you don't see the Outlook Address Book
in the Directories and Address Books list, click the Back button, then
select "Add a new directory or address book", then "Additional Address
Books", and add the OAB. Then keep clicking Back until you get back to the
first dialog box, and go back to the Directories and Address Books list as
you did earlier. Once the OAB appears in the list, select it and then click
Change to make sure the Contacts folder(s) you want to display are listed.
If any of them aren't listed, you'll need to enable those Contacts folders
as Outlook Address Books by right clicking the folder, selecting Properties,
clicking the Outlook Address Book tab, and checking the "Show this folder as
an E-mail address book" box. Make sure you restart Outlook after making
these changes.

Thanks for the info. I followed your instructions and I do have access
to my address book, but perhaps it's not exactly showing the way it is
supposed to. Perhaps I'm nitpicking, but I want to be sure I am doing
this correctly and Outlook is new to me.

When I click on the Address Book icon I the window has a section that
says: SHOW NAMES FROM: (I get three choices-----here are the choices)

PERSONAL ADDRESS BOOK (when I highlight it I get a partial address
book---probably from some other source.)Here is the path for this
address Book: Documents & Settings/user name/LocalSettings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Exchange\mailbox.pab

OUTLOOK ADDRESS BOOK: (when highlight it, message is "No entries in this
address book.)(When I right click and get Properties,I get the message:
The Properties Dialog Box could not be displayed. An attempt was made
to open an unsupported property)

Indented under the OUTLOOK ADDRESS BOOK is CONTACTS (This is the full
adddress book)

Is this the way it is supposed to be? Should I have addresses listed
when I highlight OUTLOOK ADDRESS BOOK or is it normal to have it
separate, in CONTACTS, indented under the OAB.

In a posting from Nov. 2, you said to someone else regarding duplicate
names in Outlook Contacts that: "> The Personal Address Book is no longer in use.
It was replaced by the Outlook Address Book years ago"

I don't know if I'm being totally unclear and making much ado about
nothing. Thanks for your patience, as I can see you get the same or
similar types of questions often.

A second issue/ question regarding Outlook. Can ASCII files be imported
into CONTACTS (from Daytimer 1997)

You have no need for the Personal Address Book. Remove it.
The Contacts Folder should indeed appear beneath the Outlook Address Book in
the "Show Names from the:" dropdown.
