How to fix??

Hi I need to know some info have wxp
when I go to sound and audio and click
on mic I can not take the check out of
the select box and can not move, the slider,
only on the mic and on the recording the midi playback
I can not click on the volume it is grayed
is this the sound card when I go to divece
manger it say everything is working fine
I am think wmp 9 might of done this when
a friend downloaded it, if it is my
sound card is via tech vinyl ac 97 codec combo
driver (wdm), driver viaudios.sys I have a driver
disk version 2.72 can I use this and how do I do it

ps. I saw that windows updated my via ac 97
so I rolled it back now I have a yellow mark
it rolled back to 2001 I have a disk, I said above
I think is newer can you tell me step by step
how to do this I need to fix this Please
because when I go to the sound card place I
don't know what card to pick???
