How to fix "Server error: Cannot rename..." error

D

Debbie

Hi,

I'm working in FP2003 and when trying to publish a file to
a Web running Server Extensions 2002 I get the following
message:

"Server error: Cannot rename ".filename.htm.tmp".

Prior to attempting to publish, the file states "conflict"
in the status column in the Remote Website View. And, when
I go to publish it prompts me with the "Do you want to
overwrite this file?" dialog box. I select the Yes button
and am then presented with the error message above. I have
published numerous other files to this Web with this same
message without encountering the server error message.

Please let me know if you need further information to help
resolve this problem.

You need to contact your host and ask then to run a check on the extensions and/or check the
permissions for your account.

Hey,

I've got the exact same issue, with the same setup as Debbie (i.e. FP2003
publishing to a site with Server Extensions 2002). The thing is, I have
admin rights to the server in question and have checked everything and all
appears to be okay.

I am willing to try an earlier version of FrontPage, such as FP2002, to see
whether the same problem occurs or not. Need to see if a trial version
exists...

Is anyone else experiencing this issue, and able to try with an earlier
version of FP or have another resolution?

Thanks,
Steven.

Going to an earlier version of FrontPage won't accomplish anything, as
both FP 2003 and FP 2002 use the same versions of the extensions.

When you say admin rights to the server, do you mean the entire
server, or just your account on the server??
There's a huge difference.

Steve,

Thanks for your reply there.

In regards to my previous post, the access I have is to the entire server.

The reason I want to test it is to see whether there is any inconsistency
between the two versions, even though both share the same Server Extensions
version. I've tried practically everything but a different version of
FrontPage.

From my searching, unfortunately there's no trial version of FP2002
available.

Cheers,
Steven.

Since the contents of the original post were not included in yours, can you post the exact error
message you're getting when you try to publish?

Also a URL so someone can take a peek at the server / site.

I'm performing a full publish from a site whose contents is from an older
version of FP. I saved it from the older (FP) server to a local web, and
tried publishing it onto the IIS box with Server Extensions 2002.

Practically the same error as reported initially.

"Server error: Cannot rename ".filename.htm.tmp".

However, the files that seem to cause the most grief have been .pdf files
(error not mentioning the .tmp extension) and once on an .html file.

The server in question:

- 1 hard drive, with plenty of free space
- tried remaking the virtually hosted site within IIS
- tried removing/reinstalling Server Extensions 2002

What I haven't tried doing is restarting IIS or the machine itself (it's
not my machine to restart), but seeing it only happens on particular files
I wouldn't think a restart would do the job.

I've transferred the site across via a painstaking manual process (zip
original, FTP, unzip, etc.) followed by recalculating the web, and the site
appears to be functional. Will need to have all aspects operational. I'm
just worried if changes to the server need to be made and this problem re-
appears, I won't know how to handle updating the site from then on in...

Thanks for your advice,

Steven.

Saved from the server troubles me. Did you "publish" it to a location on your hard drive??

To maintain continuity of a web, it *must* be published between machines. ( server - client or
client-server )

So, did you take the old web, publish it to a folder, zip the folder, transfer the zip, unzip at the
new location and then open the web, recalculate and then *publish* to IIS??

This would be the proper procedure.

Hey,

I...

- logged into old server via FP
- 'published' to local machine's web
- zipped up web
- transferred zip to new server
- unzipped web's main files/folders (so, excluding FP's private folders
it creates)
- recalculated web

This is the latter procedure taken and it _may_ be fully operational.

The procedure used and that appears to be failing...

- logged into old server via FP
- 'published' to local machine's web
- transferred folders firstly
- 'published' remainder of site
- tried 'publishing' to new site
- transferred folders (this is where the issue occurs)

What I haven't tried doing is a site-site copy, without saving to a local
web. Do you think this should make any difference?

Thanks,
Steven.

I have not yet published a new web. I am still working on my hard drive. I cannot rename the Web. I get the same server error posted here. Should I be able to rename the file at this point, or do I have to wait until I publish it to the server?

Publish the web to another location on your HD, giving it the name that you want.

If using a server, then publish to http://localhost/newname
