How to fix network message saying "password of the user has expired"

H

Harry

My Norton Antivirus subscription expired and something must have
happen when I updated it today because I can no longer able access
either computer using the other.

On one computer I'm getting:

The network is not accesssible. "The password of this user has
expired".

I've heard antovirus software can cause problem but never experienced
it. Any ideas on how I can reset my password or fix this problem
otherwise. I'm the only on my network.

Are you sure you updated your Norton Antivirus? There's a nasty bit of
software running around out there that gives you a pop-up message that says
your subscription has expired but when you click on it you don't get a
Norton renewal, but rather a product called Win Antivirus 2004. This
product apparently also brings some spyware/adware with it.

Hopefully just a coincidence. I would boot into safe mode with networking to see if
the problem persists. If it does not then you have something installed on your
computer that is causing the problem which can be pinned down hopefully through using
something like msconfig to do a selective startup. Msconfig is not in W2K but you can
use a copy from an XP computer or download from the internet by searching for it.

Assuming that the users password has actually expired, you can check that by using
the [ net user username ] command on the computer you are trying to access. Of course
substitute the real username for "username" . If you logon to the computer where the
account is located, you will be given the option to change it by entering the
existing password first. Any local administrator can also reset the user account
using lusrmgr.msc and going to local users and right clicking the user account. A
user account can also be configured in it's properties to have the password never
expire if that is OK with your security procedures. -- Steve
