How to edit a field

I have typed my first conditional field settings in a word merge document.
The results in the merged document have worked as I wanted, except that I
made a small typing error. But when I returned to the main document, I
couldn't retrieve the typing to edit it. It's still there somewhere because
a second merge gets the right data again. But how do you edit the main
document without having to reenter all the field characters?
