how to disable windows messenger

S

shapeshifter

i know it should be simple but apparently it's not. i have already:

- disabled messenger in admin tools.. 'services'
- deleted messenger-pf from windows\cache and all random copies of messenger
(msmsgs.exe) EXCEPT in c:\windows
- disable access thru 'set program access and defaults'
- checked startup programs to verify that messenger was not listed

nevertheless messenger still keeps trying to access the net, both as a
server and as a client.

what steps can i take next short of deleting messenger from my computer (i
may need it in the future)? Is there something in the pf file that keeps
loading the program. if so, how do i edit it to change that behavior?

Some programs like Outlook is depending on MSN Messenger... Do you really
need to close it?

And, messenger in "services" is NOT the MSN Messenger! It's another sort of
messenger service (the old, good, "net send"). But, you can close that one
too... Normal peoples aren't using it. :)

Go to www.grc.com to see details about messenger.
He has a free program called Kill the Messenger.
Just removing messenger does not protect your computer.
You need to get a firewall of some sort and configure
it properly. It's well explained at grc.com

No, Outlook Express (not Outlook) opens Windows Messenger, not MSN
Messenger. it can be truned of, if the person closes their contacts column
and opens options, and removes the startup of WM. Also, this can be done in
the WM itself in the options/preferences, and choose to not startup when
Windows does.

She's referring to Windows Messenger, not MSN, but MSN will start on its own
unless it is changed to do so.

Wrong, I have MSN Messenger, and it in no way starts up in my Outlook or OE,
as I have it set to NOT startup on its own, even then, that particular app
DOES NOT start with those email apps, only Win Messeneger does!!. There was
no way to do this with Win Messenger even if the preferences were turned
off, short of turning off the contacts column. Win Messenger will start in
IE if you go to your Hotmail account. I no longer have anything related to
Win Messenger on my PC,,, it is totally gone.

Also, you still don't read, as the article you linked has nothing to do with
MSN Messenger, only Windows Messenger!!!

Did I say that you said that it was?

But, of cource, you can continue this with "Did I say that you said that I
said...." ;-)

You don't even read your own post, and this is what i told you about MSN,
and Windows, now you act like you only mentioned Windows Messenger, of which
I DID NOT SAY that program DID NOTopen with OE or Outlook, read your own

You said MSN messenger, I told you different; fortunately, you cannot hide
your mistake since it is already all over USENET!

First, I was wrong on my first post (mixed MSN Messenger and Windows
Messenger). We both aggree on that, right?

Second, You wrote in your post that "Outlook Express (not Outlook) opens
Windows Messenger". Do you see the "not Outlook" part??

My post, "Both Outlook and Outlook Express is using Windows Messenger" only
pointed out that Outlook is also using Windows Messenger, not only OE!

-> fortunately, you cannot hide your mistake since it is already all over
USENET!
Why would I hide my mistakes? Everyone is making mistakes... It's nothing
strange with that.

Let us stop posting these useless posts now, about who's right and who's
wrog.

Frustrating, huh? :) I went through the same thing several
months ago. The below posted worked for me for disabling Windows
Messenger. I now fire up MSN Messenger when & only when I want to be
seen online. Quoting from someone else's message, he warned that it
you lose some other applications, but I do not think it make a any
difference, I think the apps you lose are unused or not necessary.

Just copy/paste the line, or two lines below (depends on how your
newsreader is displaying the line in question), that he says to
copy/paste - it should paste correctly. In case not, there is a space
between "Section" & "%windir", as well as "Dll32" & "advpack"):
--------------
close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon
in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the
start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like)

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK."

If you are running Ad Aware you can DL the plugin they have on their
site for enabling/disabling messenger. Convenient.
