How To Disable AutoPlay?

R

Robert Howells

Using XP Pro/SP2...

Whenever I insert a USB drive, XP takes an inventory of the contents of the
drive and then displays a dialog ...

"The disk or device contains more than one type of content... What do you
want Windows to do?"
Play
using Windows Media Player

Copy pictures to a folder

View a slideshow of the images

etc.

How can I set XP to NOT take an inventory and prompt for action? I simply
want to insert the USB drive and XP simply shows it as an additional drive
(in Windows Explorer).

Thanks!

Next time you insert the USB drive, click "cancel" on the Autoplay window or just hit
the *enter* key (which hits the cancel button) & after it's fully loaded, go to My
Computer & right click on the device & scroll down to "Properties". Then click on the
"Autoplay" tab & tick the "Select an action to perform". Click on the preferred
action,(Take no action or Open folder to view files, etc.) click "Apply" & then click
"OK".

Download 'TweakUI' from microsoft (google for 'powertoys'). This allows you
to turn off the autoinsert notify for selected drives.
