How to determine mainboard type and/or RAM?

Hi everyone:

I have this relatively new computer and my friend tells me that if I buy
more RAM and possibly better CPU I will have better performance off of it. I
want to do it but I have absolutely no clue what kind of RAM to buy, what
motherboard I have, etc.

CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ 1.66GHz
RAM: 512 MB

Does anyone know where can I get this info?

Try your computers manufacture web site. It should have the information
you are looking for. It also should be in the manual that came with the
computer

Your Ram is probably PC-2100 or PC-2700 DDR Ram. Go to
http://www.crucial.com/index.asp to find out
exactly. Depending on what you use your PC for another 512MB couldnt
hurt. But, what you have already is usually
enough for most basic computer tasks.

Thanks. Nice program. Here's what it said:

Motherboard ID 08/01/2003-nVidia-nForce-6A61BB01C-00
Motherboard Name Biostar M7NCD
System Memory 512 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

http://www.biostar.com.tw/products/mainboard/board.php?name=M7NCD

From what it says, can I get the following:
(1) RAM 1GB PC3200 400MHZ
(2) AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2 Ghz 400FSB XP3200 OEM 512K

I don't know much about it (all this is off eBay). Can someone help???

a) manufacturer web sites
b) user manual(s)

1) Start > Run > MSinfo32.exe.

or

2) Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information

or

3) Start > Run > DXDiag.exe.

or

4) Right-click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager.

or

5) If none of the built-in tools provide the information you want, you
can use these utilities to help determine the answer to your question:

SiSoft's Sandra
http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.php?dir=&location=sware_dl&lang=en

Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Unlimited Possibilities' AIDA32
http://forum.aumha.org/overflow/aida32.zip

Lavalys' Everest Home
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en

or

6) Look in the manual/documentation that came with the computer.

It is absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, Crucial Memory's web
site (www.crucial.com) has a database to help to find the right RAM for
your specific make and model computer and/or motherboard.
