How To Determine Folder Size

D

Dave

I would like to determine how much HD space various specific folders on
several drives are taking up. The only way I see to do this is to open all
sub-folders, down to the lowest level, note the size of each file in it,
then add them up.

There has to be a better (easier) way to do this. I sure would appreciate
any suggestions.

The easiest way is to open the Command window, move to the folder
you want to measure and type the command dir /s /a. This will give
you the exact total of of this and all sub-folders to the nearest byte.

For just occasional use, do as John John says - right-click each folder and
left-click Properties from the drop-down menu. If the folders are all at the
same "level", ie you can see them all at the same time in the right-hand
pane of Windows Explorer, then you can Ctrl-left-click to select several at
once, then do the right-click > Properties and get the sum of their sizes.
(You can't do this multiple selecting in the *left*-hand pane.)

I use a utility that adds itself to Windows Explorer and shows folder sizes
as an optional column in the Details view -
http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/. This is free - the one LVTravel suggests
is "free to download" but $27.90 for a personal licence <bites tongue>.
