How to decompress files

O

Old Geaser

Hello,

I have Partition magic installed and trying to change C:\drive from NTFS to
Fat 32. During the operation I get error 1681 which states compressed
files cannot be converted to Fat 32. It states the file is 145 (128).
Reason for change is I want to install win 98 to use old programs using a
dual boot.

This is all Greek to me. How can I find the compressed files and decompress
them? The only thing I can remember about compressed files is in Outlook
Express. I think I compressed something there. Any Help??? Thanks in
advance,

Bert

Hi Gerry,

XP is installed on c:\. I have 3 other partitions on Drive 1, pluss 2
partitions on Drive 2.

I think you are going to run into trouble with what you want to do. As win
98 has to go onto C: it is going to affect your win xp.

Hi NIK;

No I have did this before on another computer. You can install 98 on
another partition. Problem is both C:\ and the other partition have to be
Fat 32. I have converted F:\ to fat 32 but there are compressed files on
C:\ that I have to convert to uncompressed. By having 98 on another
partition, there is a dual boot at startup. Worked great on the other
computer. I will keep on trying to find out how to uncompress files.
Thanks,

Bert

Have you read this Article?
How To Create a Multiple-Boot System in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306559

Note it is much easier to install Windows 98 and then Windows XP. This
is intimated in the Article. I believe there are ways around this
problem but I do not have the details.

Another aspect you have to watch is the boot.ini file, which is located
at the very beginning of your C drive.

Another problem is file formats. You can convert FAT32 to NTFS but not
the reverse. To do the reverse you have to reformat, which destroys the
contents of the partition. Windows 98 cannot access NTFS formatted
drives.
http://aumha.org/win5/a/ntfs.htm

These are some of the problems Decompressing files on your C drive will
not get you there.

Do you have a very good reason for wanting to install Windows 98?

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for the info. I know the best way to have 98 and xp is to install
98 first. I am trying to do this without reformatting C:\ again. In
Doug's "Windows Tweaks and Tips:, he tells how 98 can be installed on
another partition after XP has been installed. I am using the program
Partition Magic which can change the format from NTFS to Fat 32. I have
did this on the partition I plan to install 98. The only problem is there
cannot be any compressed files and apparently I have some as the program
stops and says there is. Once I can uncompress these files Partition magic
will be able to convert to Fat 32.

The main reason I want 98 is that I am a Ham radio operator that has a few
programs that were wrote for 98 and does not have updates to XP. Also my
scanner was made for 98. It does have updates for XP but does not work
correctly. Anyway, I may just wait until something goes wrong and I have
to reinstall XP. I then can install 98 then XP. Thanks for everything.

You only need System Restore enabled on the drive / partition where
Windows XP resides.
