How to create an association

I receive PPS (Powerpoint slide) email and when I click open, a flag says
to create an association in Control panel\Folder options. I can find the
pps file there in file types and and it says to click advanced button. I
click I think it was save as default. Nothing happens. How do I create
a association for opening Powerpoint? I am using Microsoft Live Mail for my
email. Thanks

First you have to have either PowerPoint or PowerPoint Viewer (PowerPoint
costs $$$, PowerPoint viewer is free from MS). If you have either one
installed, save the attachment to your hard drive. Double-click to open and
the "open with what" dialogue box should come up (unless .pps is associated
with another file, in which case right-click on it and select "Open with. .
.."). Look down the list of programs offered and see if either PP or PPV is
listed. Pick one, check the "Always use selected program . . ." box, and
click OK. From now on, you should be able to open a .pps file from within
Mail without having to save it to your hard drive.

To be able to create file associations you have to be logged on with
Administrator privileges.

Then open 'Folder Options' control panel, click on 'Advanced'. Then
click on the 'Open' command and the 'Edit' button (if no 'Open' command
to edit, create 'New') and browse to your PowerPoint program to make an
association.

Well this is going to be a tough one. Thanks for all of the replies. I have
been working on this for some time.

I have PP viewer installed. In windows live email, I saved the pps email
attachment to my documents. I rt click and select open with. I click PP
viewer and there is a fast Microsoft PP pop up then instead of seeing the
picture, the Print folder comes up. It is the one where you can choose
printers and settings. I double click the document icon and same flash of
PP pop up, then the Print thing comes up. There is no place there to
select another place. I tried the folder options to create a avocation.

I did as Tim said and saw Open--It is my Jet Audio, Play is for Win. Media
player. I tried New. I had to know where the PP is installed. I cannot
find where PP is installed. I cannot find it at all on C:\ drive. When PP
is installed it automatically installs it where ever it wants, No choices.
Any ideas why the print thing comes up when I click PP Viewer?

The crazy thing about all of this is, my daughter has PP viewer and uses
Incredimail email program and when she gets a PP file, she just clicks
something and it opens. To bad windows live mail does not have it, or at
least I cannot find it. Maybe I am getting to old for this kind of thing,
but there is a lot of good PP pictures to be viewed. All help is
appreciated. Thanks

I found that after sending the PPS file to My Documents, I can go to Start,
All Programs, Microsoft Office Powerpoint viewer and click it . It goes to
my documents, and I can click the program and it opens. Still trying to
figure why I am getting Print Doing it the other way.

The association is incorrect. Open Windows Explorer. Click on Tools, Folder
Options, File Types. Scroll down to and click on PPS. In the Details at the
bottom, it should say "Opens with: Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer."

If it does, click on Advanced. Under Actions, it should list "open".
Highlight "open" and click on edit. In the "Application used to perform
action" box should be the path to PPV; i.e. "C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\PowerPoint Viewer\PPTVIEW.EXE" "%1" Be sure it says "%1" at the end.
The "Use DDE" box should be checked, Application should say PPTVIEW, and
Topic says System. OK out to Explorer.

If anything else is listed besides "open" in the Advanced setting (it may
list "print" or "show"), highlight "open" and click on "Set default" on the
right side of the window. OK out to Explorer.

Now when you double-click on the attachment, PowerPoint Viewer should open
the file.

It looks like I have every thing working now. I can open the pps files in
the email program without moving to another place. (Thanks to file
association fix). I can move it to another location and click open with.
(Also a file association fix) I can open a file using Start/All
programs/Microsoft PP, What more could I ask for? Thanks a million for all
of the help. Who say's I'm to old to learn something new. Thanks

Here is some more help: it's spelled "Geezer".

Nate,

When I started using Geaser, back in dos 3 days, the computers did not have
spelling correctors. Funny, but the computer did not seem to mind if it was
a misspelling. In all of the years, you are the first to mention it. Have a

I started back then too... and I am also a geezer. But I have always
known the correct spelling.
