how to create a member only page on my website

I would like to set up a page where only registered users can access and view
what I put in there. Could anyone give tell me best way to do it?

This is a free (no charge site). In my web site, I have some information
that any visitor can get in the main pages. If someone wants more
information, I would like to set up a restricted page(s) where only people
who are willing to give me more information about who they are are allowed to
view.

This is what I would like to do, but if there is an alternative, I am open
to anything:

1) A site visitor fills a form with his/her contact information.
2) After he/she sent the required information back, a confirmation message
with a unique "password" is sent back to the registerer automatically.
3) The registered user can go to a restricted area by using the "password."

It would be nice if a registerer can specify a "password," but it is not
necessary.
