how to check ink status for printers?

I have a Xerox DocuPrint M750 printer. When I had Windows 98, I was
able to use Xerox's driver, and under Property, there is an option to
see current status of different ink cartridges, i.e. if they are empty
etc. When I moved to Windows XP, Xerox's drivers no longer support the
system, on their web site, it says XP comes with a driver for the
printer. Under Property now, the appearance look similar to when it
was under Windows 98, EXCEPT I can't find somewhere an option to
examine the status of the ink cartridges. Problem is one of the ink
appears to be out, but I can't quite tell which one from looking at
the cartridges.

Those types of indicators are usually only found in the driver from the
manufacturer. If Xerox is no longer providing a specific driver, I'm afraid
you won't have that functionality in XP.

You might want to try the Windows 2000 drivers.

There's no guarantee they'll show the ink levels though. I use Windows 2000
drivers for my Epson printer. Like your printer, there are no XP drivers
except the minimal ones that come with the XP Operating System.

I have a dual boot PC (XP Pro & Windows 98). If I want to see the ink
levels, I have to boot to Windows 98SE and check them there.

sent file to printer yesterday and the little printer
icon next to clock in taskbar popped up with message
that "ink level is low". watch for this in future.
