I want to know if there is a simple way alter the text that appears in
the taskbar entry for active applications.
Secondly, let me describe how I have configured my taskbar - it may be
helpful to other users.
1 I have dragged the taskbar to the left side of the screen (from the
bottom).
2 I have switched off all taskbar properties except autohide
[Right Click on taskbar unused area [General ]]
3 I have stretched it as far right as it goes (45% of the screen
width)
This allows maximum info for 24 active applications to be viewed,
before the taskbar splits into two columns (I have never had that many
apps that I required 3 columns).
This is important to me as I believe one of the biggest efficiency
killers in the day is navigating to and fro with Windows explorer
(which I ditched a few months ago, I now use a third party,
proprietary file explorer).
Whichever explorer is used irrelevant, but it improves efficiency to
have about ten of these open. Taskbar width is necessary to see which
directory each explorer app has open.
4 To access the taskbar (that is normally hidden) there are two
methods I use
4.1 Most of the time I just used Ctrl+Esc then Esc
4.2 I have installed WipeOut (Ver 1.4.0 - I don't have the URL handy
at the moment), which puts a yellow line on the left screen margin
(you can change these options) and which you can drag to reveal the
desktop behind all open windows. and hence access the taskbar, which
doesn't normally re-focus when I track to the left side of the
screen).
5 Regarding the clock that normally appears on the taskbar and which
is no longer visible, I have installed HamsinClock (Ver 2.11 @
www.iisr-cnc.com/hamsin), this allows a date-time widget to be located
anywhere on the screen. I set this "Stay on Top" and position it top
right, just to the left of the [Minimise][Full Screen][Close] buttons
in the standard windows MMI layout.
If people are interested, I can describe what I believe is a more
efficient way of using the desktop and start menu too. Any takers?
