How to buy an xp license for a pirate copy?

Hello, I really need some help. My parents were given a PC that doesn't have
a legal copy of XP. They want to get a legal one but we just can't find
anything online to help us do this.

As XP is already installed on the machine, all they need is a license. The
PC is fairly old and if it broke they'd buy a new one so would an OEM license
be ok (I understand it only works for one PC) as we've seen these for sale on
Amazon?

Please help me, we're so stuck and really surprised there isn't more help
available on the microsoft website for people who want to go legal!

Thanks very much.

So what?I don't get your drift. If it's working and activated then ?If its
not then you probably won't get much help here, but if need the activation
key thats in the Registry(look through some of the other recent posts here
that have explained this)

You must be joking or live in China.

Haven't a clue what you're talking about, unless it's that you need to buy a
legal copy of XP.

Yes you bet.

That's what we're here for :)

You're welcome.

Is anyone out there experiencing this? I'm using the Web-interface here(IE7)
and when I put my hand cursor on "Reply", at the bottom of the window(grey
area) it says "javascript:fnNewReply()".And this function works(as you can
see i've had to hijack some one else's thread to post, sorry). But when I move
the hand cursor over "New" it says "!done, but with errors on page"-obviously
not working .Could anyone confirm whether this is a local problem?

Thanks much.

You will have to purchase a full product license from any of dozens of
vendors who offer it. An OEM license of Windows XP Professional is
currently running at about $140 and XP Home is $90. There is no way to
purchase just a license. You get the CD with the license.

What you must know about an OEM license of Windows for any version is that
it is locked to the computer on which you install it. OEM licenses cannot
legally be transferred to completely new machines, and you will probably not
be able to validate it if you try. When you buy a new computer, the Windows
O/S comes with it unless you specifiy no O/S or an alternate O/S to the
vendor. If you build a computer, you will have to purchase a new license of
Windows for it unless you already have a license for the FPP (Full-Packaged
Product) that comes in a box for around $225 for Professional and $180 for
Home. The license for the new machine, then, can be a new one (OEM or FPP)
or an old one transferred from another PC (FPP only).

Windows XP OEM is the cheapest path, but, it's tied to the first computer
you install it on - that means if you purchase XP OEM for to make the
pirated one valid, that your OEM license is tied to the computer and can
not be moved to another computer if they buy one.

If you purchase the "Retail" version of XP it can be moved from computer
to computer as long as it's not installed on more than one at a time.

Win XP Prof OEM is about $140 most places, includes key/CD
Win XP Prog Retail is about $299 most places, includes box/key/cd

You have discovered the fact that the web interface is problematic, and to
sum it up in one word, awful. These are actually Usenet newsgroups. It is
a much better experience to use a newsreader. XP comes with Outlook Express
which can be set up for newsgroup access. See this link.

If you don't want to use a newsreader, as an alternative use Google Groups,
and Google Groups Advanced Search to post new messages, and search previous
messages.

Hi Rock...

Thankfully the problem resolved itself.I think it was the website.I read the
posts in Outlook but can't reply beacause it asks me for a POP 3,SMTP server
and my ISP (sky in UK) doesn't have any mail servers, not even a NNTP one.
Pretty appalling if I may say so.

You mean Outlook Express, I assume, not Outlook. Outlook doesn't do
newsgroups.

You need an smtp server only to reply by E-mail, something you generally
should *not* do with newsgroup messages. What you should do is "Reply
Group," not "Reply." That sends your message to the newsgroup, where it
belongs.

and my ISP (sky in UK) doesn't have any mail
servers, not even a NNTP one.

If you are able to read the message in Outlook Express, you are using a
newsserver, and you can use the same server to reply to the newsgroup. Your
ISP doesn't have to supply the server; there are many free servers out
there. These Microsoft newgroups can be accessed on Microsoft's free server,
msnews.microsoft.com.

Thanks Ken for your input. You guessed it ! I was using "reply" instead of
"reply to group."
Well,
I just have one more question-how can I stop my email being broadcast via
Outlook express?

Thanks much.

Sorry, I don't understand the question. Can you clarify it? Do you want to
send E-mail with some other program?
