How to apply a slide design to just one slide

How do I apply a different slide design to just one of the slides in a slide
show? Every time I try to change a slide design for one slide only, all of
the slides are affedted. Anyone know how I can do this?

Thanks

Multiple tempates were only supported in PPT 2002 or later. If you are using
either of these versions and still not getting the option to apply a
template to a specified set of slides then check if you have turned on
Compatibility mode in the Options dialog.

I am using PP 2003.

Not sure where to find "Compatibility mode in the Options dialog." I looked
in the Options pull down menu but I found nothing like this. Could you give
me precise directions on this?
Thanks

No that I read your post again, I wonder if I explained clearly enough:

I need to apply different slide designs to different slides in the same FILE
or set of slides. In other words, I want one or more slides to have a
different design than what is chosen for all of them

Yes, that's exactly it.
Thanks

Select the slide in the thumbnail pane on the left, then click the design
template on the right.

Or click the arrow that appears when you hover over the design template and
choose "apply to selected slides."
