See Subject. Should be easy. Help suggests footers, but I'm missing
something.

If you want your page number in the footer, open the footer and press
Alt+Shift+P where you want the page number to be.

Alternatively, use Insert | Page Number, or use the Page Number button on
the contextual Header & Footer Tools | Design tab that is displayed when you
access the header or footer. If you don't want to overwrite an existing
header or footer, be sure to use Current Position.

Actually, I do not like the idea of using a footer. Here's my problem
with Insert->Page. I right-click and see Top Page, Bottom Page, ... If
I select Bottom Page, then there is only one choice and it is greyed
out. What's weird about this is that I mistakenly pressed the combo you
gave above (Alt...) while my cursor was on the page, and it produced a
1. I then realized I should try Insert. Bottom Page was not greyed out.
In stead it allowed me to do a Save, which then led me to a Create New
Block. I'm completely baffled.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The conventional locations for page
numbers are at the top of the page (in the header) or at the bottom of the
page (in the footer). Where do you want to put the page number?

The bottom.
