How much space did you reserve for System Volume Information ?

Marcus Mender

I am wondering how much space I should reserve for System Volume Information.
I want to hold the most 3 Snapshots. For my small 5 GB system partition C:
with WinXP Pro I reserved 300 MB. Is this sufficient ?

How can I find out how mach snapshots are currently kept and from which date ?

For my hugo partition D: with all my documents and files I disabled
SVI because I have additional backups an external hardddiscs.

See this article for how to get access to the System Volume Information
folder to see how much space a restore point is taking.

300MB should be enough for 3 restore points.

Yes turn off SR on data only drives. It offers you no protection for data
files anyway.

I recommend giving it enough space for 10-14 Restore Points, whatever amount
that takes. That should be somewhere around 2GB

You say you want only three Restore Points, but my view is that you
substantially weaken your ability to restore with so few Restore Points. I
understand that your C: partition is only 5GB, but my view is also that you
did yourself a severe disservice by making it so small. I think you should
probably have 10-20GB. If I were in your shoes, I would use a third-party
program like Partition Magic or BootIt Next Generation to resize your
partitions. With such a small C: partition, even if you don't do it now, you
will very likely have to do it soon.

How can I find out how mach snapshots are currently kept and from
which date ?

By going to System Restore and seeing what restore Points exist. Once you
see how many that is, you can decrease the amount gradually to see how many
that gives you, and stop decreasing when you like the result.

For my hugo partition D: with all my documents and files I disabled
SVI because I have additional backups an external hardddiscs.

Good that you disabled it, but the reason is not the correct one. System
Restore doesn't back up your user files anyway, just the operating system.
The reason to disable it on D: is that it doesn't do anything for you there.

The size of the System Volume Information (SVI) folder is influenced by
three windows applications. The amount of restore points being stored, the
Indexing Service, and the Encrypting File System (EFS).

Check to see if the Indexing Service has started. Click Start - Run and type
cmd /k net start then press enter. If Indexing Service is present, then
Indexing is turned on.

For more on EFS take look at the following article.
Best practices for the Encrypting File System

How much free disk space is there on C:\ ?

It's best not to set the amount of disk space used to hold restore points
under 500mb's. Much lower than that may cause all restore points to be lost
with the installation of a new application.

points:

How can I find out how mach snapshots are currently kept and from which date ?

The System Restore calendar will show you how many restore are available.
Dates with bold number are available. See the following instructions.

For my hugo partition D: with all my documents and files I disabled
SVI because I have additional backups an external hardddiscs.

Does this mean System Restore is not set to monitor the D: partition?

How large is the hard disk? Has the disk been partitioned or are you
at the stage of planning to partition?

A system partition of 5 gb is feasible but minimal. You need to have
20% free disk space on all disks!

Hope this helps.

I'd leave it at its default and take other measures to free up space eg
removing the dllcache etc
I dual boot on one 5gb laptop hard drive (2.5 gb each) and have System
Restore fully enabled on each. Perfectly possible.

How can I find out how mach snapshots are currently kept and from which
date ?

Open up System Restore, click on 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' as
if you were planning on using it, and click cancel after reaching the
calendar.

Yeah that's fine. It only really has value for your System partition.
