How many users can connect?

I want a possibility to connect my (future)laptop to my stationary PC with
the princip of thin clients (I don't want to spend much money on the
laptop). I understand this Remote Desktop function will do this but wonders
if the laptop connecting to the stationary WinXPpro PC will take over the
machine. Does it just log on as a user and stay in the background so that
the "Server" can be worked on as usual?
