How many floppy disk drives do you have?

On my Dell XPS Gen 2 desktop, Device Manager shows two floppy drives under
"Floppy Disk Drives." Only problem? PC only has one floppy drive. I bugged
it, but I'm wondering how many even use their floppy drives these days and,
without looking, might never know that Vista thought they had two when they
only had one... This bug has existed since, hmmmm..., well, whatever, it's
been in every build since I started testing Vista.

Next boot, check your BIOS, if 2 floppy controllers are enabled, it will
probably show 2 devices in Vista.

I have one floppy drive and Windows Vista only shows one. If you are talking
about in the device manager there is a floppy drive listed and a floppy drive
controller.

I know what you're thinking: "Did he fire six shots, or only five?"
Well, to tell you the truth in all this excitement, I've kinda lost
track myself. But, being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful
handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got
to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya punk?

Likely it is that your BIOS is misconfigured to show both floppies.
Back in W95c days, I removed the second floppy in my system to make
room for a Zip drive. W95c continued to report that second floppy.

I think I got it to go away, by removing it from the device manager.

I have ZERO floppy drives and Vista tells me I have ZERO floppy drives :p

Not the Device Manager, the BIOS.

As for who uses floppies these days, that is what is often required for
doing BIOS updates on some boards and I use my A: drive regularly for
installing legacy Windows in virtual machines using VPC. XP users should
take advantage of the Password floppy to ensure not getting locked out of
the System password, and so on. The A: drive is still very useful for me
and I would not have a desktop machine without one.

Don't see any floppy controllers in my BIOS. BIOS reports a single A: drive.

In DM, under the heading "Floppy Disk Drives" there are two entries for
Floppy Disk Drive. No evidence in the BIOS that the BIOS thinks there are
two drives.

I tend to agree with you; I don't have a floppy drive in my Dell XPS 400 and
there have been a couple of times where I wished I had one. Not the end of
the world, if I need something that I only currently have on floppy, and
there are not many examples of that scenario these days, I'll copy it to a
thumb drive and proceed from there, but still, it is more convenient to have
a floppy drive than to not have one, IMHO.

Uh, no? BIOS shows single floppy drive. There is only a single floppy drive
physically installed.

Only problem being, in my case, this system has never had more than a single
floppy drive installed. So this is not a remnant of a ghost device.

Thanks! Just looking to see if others have the same problem. Thanks for the
reply.

Hi,

I understand that the BIOS only shows one drive installed, but is the second
(B) floppy enabled in the system BIOS? These are different settings, the
latter usually being located in the more advanced settings while the former
usually shows in the standard CMOS settngs.

Is there a BIOS option enabled about " Floppy ...Seek on... " (Was
used for 5.25" 40/80 track determination)

There are three references to floppy drives in the BIOS

1. Drive Configuration - which simply lists Diskette Drive A: .... 3.5 inch,
1.44MB

2. Boot Sequence - which shows 1. IDE CD-ROM Device 2. Diskette Drive 3.
Hard-Disk drive C:

3. Integrated Devices - which has an entry for Diskette Interface which has
the options Auto (current setting), Read Only, and Off.
