how is icon info stored?

We can change the icon for an application from the properties of the
main form. How does Windows allow changing the icon afterward? Is the
icon info stored somewhere in the exe that Windows modifies?

The application's icon is stored as a Win32 resource inside the executable
file and cannot be changed at runtime.
