How go wireless?

G

George

We have a few WinXP-pro PC's, each of course has an NIC network card and
they're all linked via a Linksys BEFSX41 firewall router. What are my
options to go WIRELESS.

1) Can I (or must I) remove all the NIC cards and replace them with wireless
cards?

2) Can I or should I just plug some type of transceiver into each PC's
existing NIC Ethernet port?

3) For the hub, do most people replace the wired one with a wireless one?
G-band the one to have? Or do most people ADD the wireless access point and
KEEP the existing router? Are there pro's and con's?

4) Is G-band the one to have?

5) Would the wired print server need to be tossed out and then do I buy two
wireless print cards to plug into each of the printers?

6) Is there any WinXP or Linksys software to install and set up? Is it easy
or difficult and problematic? Are there settings/defaults in Windows that
need to be restored to get each PC and peripheral back to working again.
(It would seem to be work to re-assign IP and/or MAC addresses and all that
stuff

Thanks,

George

If the PCs are all connected to a wired LAN and the router, why do you want to change over to a
wireless network?

Thanks for responding. Would like to change to wireless for several
reasons... reduce wires in the office, enable re-setting things up faster
when we move without spreading around and re-figuring out how to hide the
wires, enable a laptop to access the network while somewhere else in the
office, enable printers to be moved around sometimes where there are no
cables unless we lay them across floor, and so forth. It's not mandatory,
just seems a lot cleaner, faster, etc.

Hi.

The page above was written by me ages ago. You might ignore the prices, but
the principles are still the same.
