hi,
is there any other way to get just the ip address of the
machine with out using the utility IPconfig/W2K or
Winipcfg/W98

Right click your network icon on the task bar > status > support

One option is to have it display in your desktop background. Use BgInfo
from SysInternals. You can specify lots of information to include on the
desktop background, one of which is the IP address. This is static
information; i.e., when the background loads is when the data is retrieved
that then becomes text that gets added to the desktop background. Then you
never have to run anything to see what is your IP address (assigned when
Windows started). You display lots of other information on the screen,
like: Windows version and service pack level, CPU, default gateway, host
name, IE version, memory, domain name, network card brand and speed, user
name, volumes (drives), and more. Basically when you login, BgInfo modifies
the desktop background to include the specified information.
