How do you change archive to use sent date?

I have imported all mesages from outlook express and the modified dates
changed to the date of the import.

I need to archive old messages sent before a set time.

Is there a way to do this? Perhaps a script or something to change the
modified date to the date the message was sent?

No, archiving works on the modified date. Importing always will change the sent date to the current date. If you still have your messages in OE, delete them from Outlook, EXPORT from OE to Outlook and your sent dates should remian intact.

Ok, I understand how it works; I do not understand why it works that way.

From a user's standpoint and as an administrator I believe that mailbox
users should be able to choose how items are to be archived. Upon looking
through other posts it seems that I'm not alone with this problem. If
anyone knows how to suggest to Microsoft that this needs to be changed, I
would appreciate it.

Thank you.

I agree, it would certainly be nice to be able to choose what criteria to
use for archiving. My personal guess as to why they use the Last Modified
date is that if a user is doing things to an email (moving them around
folders, forwarding them to other users) then they probably still have a use
for that email (more so on the forwarding than on moving it around) and as
such it shouldn't yet be archived until they haven't touched it at all.
While that makes perfect sense to me, it would make more sense to include
settings to clarify what criteria the Archive function uses. :/
