I have a DVD-+RW and am trying to backup data from the
hard drive to a DVD using Windows XP. With CD-Rs this is
a simple drag and drop procedure but it's not that easy to
burn data to a DVD. Can this not be done with Windows XP
alone like it can with a CDR Drive? What kind of software
do I need? Does anyone know a good freeware program for
such a purpose? I'm not looking to buy some expensive DVD
copying software just to backup data to a DVD. Thanks!

You need software that is capable of burning DVD'S. The
most popular programs are Nero 6 and Roxio Easy Media
Creator. They both run about $80 - $100. I prefer Nero
Burning Rom.

Well it can't be done with XP, so forget that. You're looking for a
way to drag and drop to a DVD which means packet writing to a DVD and
that probably means purchasing software.

I don't know of any free programs that can do that, however, it
doesn't mean there aren't any.

Didn't the drive ship with any software? I have not seen a drive yet that
didn't come with a copy of Roxio or Nero.

I've downloaded the software you mentioned and will give
it a try. Thanks so much!

XP cannot backup to DVD. You need third party software. There is freeware
that works well. Try this http://www.cdburnerxp.se/
