Greetings,

The directory has been down for years, and it's not coming back.

You'll have to call someone using their IP (click the Call menu, then New Call).

MI too have the same probelm (I actually have searched the web and forums for help on this matter, but no such luck as of yet)

I did not know until now there was no Directory server.

However, even when I place a call to someone else using their IP address, the message

"Directory server could not be found

You may not be connected to the network or mistyped the server name

Click in Options..............select the General Tab"

Netmeeting work perfectly the first time I used it.

After that, it hasnt worked since and just displays that message: whether I place a call or the other person places a call to me.

Any help on this matter would be appreciated as it really is fustrating now!

Thank you.

Suggest you read www.meetingbywire.com. It is a little long, but all you
need to know is there.
Also, if you can give some details of your system and how you are attempting
the call, perhaps someone could help.

I'm on Windows XP Home edition.

I use MSN Messenger regularly, however for Video conferences my collegue has to use Netmeeting because the camera isnt compatible with MSN (appararently).

My original post on this which I have asked for help is as follows:

"I have got Netmeeting installed on my system, and it had worked fine.

However, I tried to use it again for the second time and I have had no such luck being able to use it again.

My collegue places the call using MSN, and I am connected (and my collegues Netmeeting is working fine.)

However, after aprox 1 minute, the message:

"The Directory server cannot be found.
You may not be connected to the network, or you may have mistyped the server name.

To change your server, click on Tools, Options and select the general tab".

pops up and I cannot use it.

I have looked on all possible websites for information about this, but none seem to help or offer any soltuions I can follow - nor does the General Tab in the Tools menu.

I am apparently logged onto the Microsoft Internet directory when I look into the Tools menu.

(p.s; like I have said before, I have looked and browsed the Microsoft support pages - including this forum, and the offical Microsoft site)"

I have looked at the Website you offered which has said about Netmeeting and XP, and I have read through it all (disabling Firewalls etc), but all these actions I have already taken.

I am however, slightly confused as to why Netmeeting worked the time I installed it (well, accessed it for the first time) and to why it will not work now.

I apologise I cant really offer anymore information on my system but ive provided as much information as I know!

Thanks a lot by the way.

The Microsoft Directory Server has not worked since 1999. So, the one way
to connect that will work, is to call someone by their IP address. They can
find that by the Help/About in NetMeeting. Then use the Call button and
enter the IP address and then Call. However, if they are behind a firewall
or such they will not be reachable. Once again, read www.meetingbywire.com

Yeah, well Ive placed a call to my collegue using the Place call button using there IP adress. It says that Im in a call, but now I have no audio or visuals.

When they try to do the same for me (use my IP address and placing a call that way), it still comes up with the "your not logged into the Directory" message

For some reason, it keeps thinking there is a Directory server? hahaha.

Ahh well, Ie read through that site, but it doesnt really help for XP solutions.

Thanks a lot anyway for your help, and I suppose it just isnt going to work!!

OK, first bring up NetMeeting and click the Tools/Options and on the first
page UNCHECK THE item associated with a DIRECTORY SERVER. That will cure
the one problem about the Directory Server, also make sure that the one
associated with DO NOT LIST MY NAME IS CHECKED.. Second, how are you
connecting to the Internet? Dial up, Cable, DSL? Third do you have a
Router? Some DSL providers use a NAT modem and that causes a lot of
problems. OK, now how are you determining you IP address? Use the
Help/About, that is the correct one to use in the calling.

You need to bring up NetMeeting and click Tools/Options and Check the first
item associated with the Directory Server and UNCHECK the second item, then
try again.

Yeah, Ive read through that site; but it doesnt really answer my problems for Windows XP and Netmeeting.

I have tried the Place Call/enter IP address but it still thinks the
Microsoft Internet Directory is running, because it still displays the
message I previously typed out!
This also applies to when my collegue places a call using the IP address.

Nevermind, I just dont think its going to work at all! (Although I still
dont understand why it worked once and never again?!)
