How do I unlock MS Word 2000 at Startup?

MS Word has worked well for 3+ years but now locks up whenever the program or
a Word Document is selected. The msg is "system is dangerously low in
resources" I've deleted desktop/system tray icons but with no success. I
have a 4 yr old Dell 1.7GHZ with 256 RAM. It has worked in the past and I'm
perplexed as to why it won't work now. Any ideas out there?
