How do I turn off or REMOVE this nightmare

I just bought this new notebook. I can not find a way to turn off this stupid
program! I follow the steps that it shows in the HELP file but where it says
I can change whether its the default or not, or do use it for my mail or not,
the options are light and won't let me edit!
What the HECK?
I've never had a problem with any of the computers I've had in the past...
and we have 4 running right now!
How do I get this nightmare to turn off?????
Thanks

Mrs Wonka is right, this Windows Mail is a nightmare. Your answer is "go and
turn W M off. There is no gettting rid of W M. Vista recognizes my email as
default and yet when I want to open an attachment WM always opens it and then
my email addresses, which are in my default mail, will not show. Also if I
am in a program where I want to send an email and must use the file to send
it, W M tries to to send it. And of course there is no information in WM, so
it cannot do the job for me and I must always try some other way to get this
information sent and sometimes I cannot save to disk, things that need to be
sent, so I must go to a computer that has XP and my default email, so that I
can send it. I keep going back default programs but there is no way to
change this. There is definitely an engineering deficency in Windows Vista.
It is much too controlling.

What happens if you disable access to Windows Mail in Control Panel >
Default Programs > Set Program Access and Computer Defaults, under "Custom"?
In Control Panel > Default Programs > Associate a File Type or Protocol, can
you change the URL:MailTo Protocol to your e-mail program?

Too, when you right -click the Start button, and choose Properties, and
click on Customize, at the bottom of the window, is your e-mail client
listed in the drop-down for "E-mail link:"?

Not sure where you are speaking of but there is no email client or clients
ever listed. WM does not have my address book and also I cannot put in my
email address to send or recieve there because it does not recognize html's
nor do I want to use WM. I just want to use msn mail with incredimail as my
facilitator. It does a fantastic job but Vista does not allow incredimail to
open the attachments.

It would have been helpful if you had stated what your preferred email
program is. Or is that a secret?
It's merely a matter of making your preferred email program the default.

Then your problem is with IncrediMail, not Vista or Windows Mail.
Check with the IncrediMail forums or customer support as to how
to make it the default email program.

Perhaps you are using a version of IncrediMail that is not Vista-
compatible. How is that Vista's fault?

Hi Gary,

I did write a couple of posts so you may have missed this. But this is my
email and program I wish to use. Hope you have a suggesion how to make it
work poroperly.

Well, I can't think of any further instructions than those I stated, that
is, right-click the Start button on your Taskbar, choose Properties, and
click on Customize. At the bottom of the Customize Start Menu window, is
your e-mail client listed in the drop-down for "E-mail link:"? For emample,
mine says I have a choice between Windows Mail, or Windows Live Mail. I
would have to install Windows Live Mail, however, for that to be a valid
choice.

I'm not sure what program you mean by "MSN mail", but if it's Hotmail,
perhaps this will help:

Register Windows Live Hotmail with the Default Programs tool in Windows
Vista

Too, I don't know anything about IncrediMail, or how it works as a
facilitator, but maybe this will help:

Q: Is IncrediMail compatible with Windows Vista?
A: Currently, IncrediMail is not compatible with Windows Vista. We will
provide a version that is fully compatible with Windows Vista in the near
future. See:
http://www.incredimail.com/incredim...e.aspx?article_id=263&lang_id=9&referrer_id=1

Q: Does Internet Explorer 7 have any impact on my IncrediMail?
A: IncrediMail found a major compatibility problem with your current
IncrediMail version and the new Internet Explorer 7. More:

As I stated in one of my other replies, your problem is with IncrediMail,
not with Vista or Windows Mail. Whenever a new email program, is
installed, it is supposed to register itself with Default Programs, and
is supposed to assign to itself certain functions like the MailTo protocol
handler.

Perhaps you are using a version of IncrediMail that is not Vista-
compatible. Check with the IncrediMail forums or customer support
as to how to make it the default email program in Vista.

Thanks for doing the leg work.
Sounds like the IncrediMail programmers have been twiddling
their thumbs because that same disclaimer has been up for a long time.

Thanks for the suggestions but Dean-Dean who gave me very good instructions,
did not do the job. I would think it might be incredimail but wm happens
without even having incredimail open. I also have it happen with just using
msn which is listed as my default mail. And when I want to send email from
another site (independent of any email) WM pops up not my default mail. I
have tried Dean Dean's sugggestions and restarted computer and WM still pops
up. I guess I will have to go to someone with my computer and see if I can
resovle this issue and I do think that it is Vista's fault. I don't and
haven't had that problem with XP. It understands what default means.

I don't know how to put this any plainer.
IncrediMail is at fault for failing to register itself with the OS
(Vista) as the default email program.

I don't know what you mean by "wm happens without even
having incredimail open."

If click on a MailTo link on a website, it is going to bring up
the default email program. The only way to avoid that
is to copy and paste the link directly into your webmail.

Gary not all things are able to be copy and pasted and sometime you want to
send them by email from file. And yes I can save things and copy and paste
things and go to different mails to send and go to documents and make sure
it's there or I can go to file email to... but this will not send with my
default mail which is msn.com (updated to windows live), it goes to windows
mail (what was outlook in older versions) and I can't change it. I have
done the moves that dean dean suggested and it does not register. It still
likes to be the big default. Thanks for the help but I think I will find a
computer guru that can help me with the computer hands on. I obviously can't
get this working right by myself even with all your help. Thanks Vista! I
have other issues with Vista, also but I won't go into them here. It is not
as nice as XP. Sometimes you don't fix what isn't broken.

G

Gary VanderMolen

OK, so your mail transport is MSN, updated to Windows Live
(Hotmail). I'm not sure how IncrediMail fits into that picture.

Anyway, there is a fix that will make Windows Live Hotmail
the default email 'program' (although it's not really a program).
See http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/224/1/

Hope this helps.

I am going to try and get this working right and I am eliminating the
incredimail so it is not part of the issue. I prefer to allow Inc mail to
work my live hotmail but for now I will do without. Actually I am a
realestate agent with a page I use to send mail to clients and when I click
on their email address it should pop up the default mail but the W. M pops up
and asks to be opened I deniy it and a box pops up saying I have not
installed default mail properly. I have followed Dean-Dean's advise and I
have tried actually making yahoo mail the default also. Nothing seem to
work. W. M keeps popping up. I appreciate your trying to help and I will
try the link that you sent right now.
