How do I start in MS-DOS mode?

A

Angie Parkin

I have the virus trojan horse Revop.B and I've downloaded
instructions about how I can delete the infected files
myself, however, I can't seem to see how to start the
computer in MS-DOS mode. Silly question, I'm sure, for
most folks, but nevertheless, I'm asking for help. I've
tried clicking on the F8 key while the computer is
booting up but no dice. Thank you for your time!!!

You cannot start your PC in MS-DOS mode because Windows XP
does not have a MS-DOS Mode. While in Windows XP, you can use
the MS-DOS emulator by going to Start > Run and type: CMD , and
hit enter.

You dont start the computer in MSDOS mode.
You start it in safe mode, for which F8 is the right thing to do.

Also, get a firewall program or you'll be uninstalling another virus 3
minutes after you've fixed this one.

You'll need to boot to a disk that has DOS on it, in order to get into
DOS, and DOS is not a part of XP.

Of course it may just be easier to download a Sasser removal tool and
follow its instructions for Sasser Removal.

There are plenty of posts here that already show where you can find
those tools, or you could just Google for one.

If your manuel removal instructions specify using DOS, then DO NOT try
them in XP, even from it's command promt.

I believe Revop.B is a spyware "trojan", not a sasser worm variant.

The closest XP equivalent to "MS-DOS mode" is "Safe Mode, Command Prompt."

Otherwise, you may have to boot from a bootable floppy or CD.

NT doesn't contain DOS, as I'm sure you will be told shortly, if not
already. It has command line interpreters Command.com and Cmd.exe,
but these run on top of the NT kernel and emulate DOS if required.

What you need is a maintenance OS, as per
http://cquirke.mvps.org/whatmos.htm - and if your NT (XP) is installed
on FAT32 rather than NTFS, your choice is wider and includes DOS mode
from a Win9x new enough to read FAT32 (Win95 SR2 or later).

If you are on FATxx and want to install a Win9x DOS mode, you can.
Dual-boot considerations are covered in...

http://cquirke.mvps.org/multboot.htm - layers of multi-booting
http://cquirke.mvps.org/multos.htm - how MS OSs work as multi-boot
http://cquirke.mvps.org/multplan.htm - planning multiboot strategy

....but these don't go into the nitty-gritty of setting this up from
scratch, or retro-fitting these options later. Both are possible, but
are brittle; it's easy to screw up, and I'll write up those topics as
and when time permits.

If you used NTFS, well... good luck. I've covered your maintenance OS
options in http://cquirke.mvps.org/whatmos.htm but it's a smaller set.

Yep, I goofed on that part. I'm in a Sasser state of mind.

Thanks for catching that for me! :)

Greetings --

Short answer: You can't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit
graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation,
has never used or included MS-DOS. The closest they have is the
Command Prompt window.

WinXP, like its predecessors WinNT & Win2K, is a pure 32-bit GUI
OS, and does not include or "ride upon" any version of DOS, as did
Win3.x & Win9x/Me. WinXP does include a command-line emulator for
those times when GUI applets are unnecessary/redundant, but it cannot
be started in "DOS mode."

Perhaps you'd better reread those instructions. Perhaps they
refer to using the CLI (command-line interface.)

XP has no DOS included. So you boot a startup floppy disk - I would
use a Win98 one, preferably the one which can be made on any machine
not running XP, by running the program
tools\mtsutil\fat32ebd\fat32ebd.exe on the Win98 CD
