I am needing to know how to set Microsoft Word to a 65 character line?

Word doesn't count the number of characters per line. Instead, it
measures the total width of the text on the line, and forces an
automatic line break when the next word exceeds the current
margins-plus-paragraph-indents measurement.

Most of the fonts used in Word are "proportional" -- different
characters have different widths, so the number of characters per line
varies according to what letters you type. To get a constant number of
characters per line, you have to choose one of the few nonproportional
fonts: Courier New and Lucida Sans Typewriter are the usual choices.

When you use one of these fonts, the point size multiplied by the
characters per inch (the "pitch") is approximately 120. If you set the
point size to 12 pt (that is, 10 characters per inch) and set the
margins to be slightly more than 6.5" apart, you'll fit 65 characters
per line.
