How do I "right align" chapter numbers in a table of contents?

When automatically generating a TOC in Word 2007 the chapter numbers are
left-aligned by default. How do I set them to right-align by default?

They should not be left-aligned by default, since the default TOC field
inserts a right-aligned tab stop at the right margin. If this has become
changed in your TOC, you can modify the tab settings in the relevant TOC
styles.

This question is about chapter numbers, which are not automatically right-aligned on the right margin.

I have this same question and have not been able to find an answer that allows me to continue updating the TOC -- all answers I have found require manual formatting.
