How do I restore a Backup ?

How do I restore a Backup (ntbackup.exe) created with the back up utility
from a tape or an external hard drive to a new (empty, un-partition, and
unformatted) new internal hard drive?
I noticed that the utility disk made in the advanced option of the backup
program is non bootable.
Do I have to install Windows XP and drivers and then access the media where
the back up is kept or is there an easier such as through the recovery
console.

This is assuming that I only have 1 hard-drive and it crashed, but I had
backed it up onto a tape or external hard drive.

You need to install a basic version of WinXP on a different drive
(e.g. drive D: on a spare disk). When it's installed, use ntbackup
to restore the real WinXP installation onto its proper drive
(usually drive C:).

I usually use alternative backup methods that let me restore an OS
to a blank disk without first loading an auxiliary version of Windows.
