How do I remove a virus?

I have AVG anti-virus free addition and I recently updated it. After the
update I ran a virus test and it says I have 8 viruses. The AVG progam didn't
heal, restore or ask to send them to the virus vault. When I look up
"details" on the infected files it said to go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com
to get the fix. Help I can't find the "fix". My computer knowlwdge is very
basic so please send replys in laymans terms. Thank you.

Since you didn't tell us the names of the viruses, it's impossible to
give you specific advice about them and why you should go to Windows
Update.

Try cleaning up your machine by getting TrendMicro's Sysclean and
scanning in Safe Mode. Here are instructions:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made.

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.

After you've done the initial work with Sysclean, make sure you have the
latest program version of AVG and the latest virus definitions. Then do
your scan with AVG in Safe Mode.

To get into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is
starting up. This will get you to the correct menu to choose Safe Mode.
After you've done your scans, rebooting will get you back to Regular
Mode.

I decided to follow the advice you gave here, but when I run 'sysclean.com'
in Safe Mode (Win98SE) I get a message about running a text program may
cause problems with my video card?

Should I go ahead an run it in Safe Mode or run it from a dos prompt?

Yes, it's OK. Just go ahead anyway. You'll get the message a few times,
so just keep an eye on it. I've used Sysclean on more Win9x machines
than I could count; this happens on all of them and there are no ill
effects from running the program anyway.
